Installed the plugin according to the instructions.  Installed OK, restarted calibre, but still get the pop-up window just as before:

There is a step missing from the Tutorial. You need to double click on the plugin in Caliber, then enter your Kindle Serial Number. I worked like a charm.

Followup: Found my problem.
I had added the ebook file after installing calibre, but before installing the plugin.
In that case, installing the plugin will not re-read the ebook.
Solution:  Delete the file from calibre, then add it again.

I had the same problem until I followed the tip from Riad, posted on 11/30/2011.  Double click on the plug-in and enter your Kindle's serial number.  Then, delete the book from the calibre library and reload it.  It works great!

How would you remove DRM from ebooks you can no longer download and put in the Kindle for PC?  I have subscribed to magazines via my Kindle for several years, but Amazon only keeps the last few issues to download.  I have them backed up on my computer, but they are DRM'd to the Kindle device.  I can't transfer them to another device, so I can't use them at all until I can figure out how to remove the DRM without having to redownload them for the Amazon PC program.

I've followed the procedure for adding the plugin to remove the DRM.  It didn't work.
After double clicking the plug in, it asks for a 10 digit serial number.  My Kindle has more than 10 characters.  When I ADD a book I get the "Adding window" and then after a few seconds the "K4MobiDeDRM Plugin" window appears showing  "Error decoding....."

I've had this plugin for the longest time and it has just stopped working.  I keep getting this error message:

I plugged in my Serial number at prestonlee but my PID has definitely not changed...

I am using Kindle for PC and Kindle for the Mac.  When installing the calibre plugins there isn't a serial # or a PID available.  The instructions tell you not to enter anything.  My mac version of calibre used to remove the DRM but has quit working since I installed the last couple of updates.  I just installed the PC version and the plugins and it doesn't work either.  Calibre is looking for a PID even though the Kindle e-books are on Kindle for PC.  Does anyone know if something has changed? Or is there someone out there with a new installation which works.  Thanks...

Success!  DRM removal fixed!

As listed above, I am using the most current versions of Calibre 0.8.41 and the plugins 4.8. The issue was I installed the most current version of Kindle for PC, 1.9.1.  Apparently, after version 1.8.3, Kindle changed its format of it's DRM  breaking the current DRM removal tools.

The solution, Deactivate the currently installed version of Kindle for PC and uninstall it, download version 1.8.3 or eariler, install it, re-download all of my e-books. Also don't forget to uncheck automatic updating in Kindle for PC, Tools > Options > General or it will upgrade back to the newest version and break the DRM removal plugin again....

I hope this is helpful to someone.....

Where did you get Kindle for PC 1.8.3? Can't find it anywhere on line anymore...
reply

Kindle for PC version 1.8.3 can be found here http://www.filehippo.com/download_kindle_for_pc/changelog/11267/

I followed Jim's fix steps, and it worked. It was a little time consuming, especially because importing the books into Calibre takes longer with the decryption, but all of my Kindle books are now in ePub format.

*Just don't forget the step to turn off automatic updating. Tools > Options > General, uncheck the box.

The calibre plugin works!! I use a calibre on debian linux. At first when I installed the plugin, I still saw the DRM locked sign pop up when I read in a book. Then I delete the books, restart the cablibre and readd those books. There is still the 'error code...' showing up when adding a book, but finally when I double click the added books, they can be opened.

Fixed the Kindle "No Key Found. Most likely the correct PID has not been given". First, your Kindle s/n should be entered with *no spaces*, which is not how it shows on Amazon's "Manage your Kindle". You can find your PID, given the S/N by using the tool at http://kindletools.prestonlee.com/. Once you enter those in the plugin custom config (NO SPACES, PID, comma, S/N), you can import directly from the actual kindle by USB wire - much faster than d/l ing to Kindle for PC.

Hope this helps

Hi, Mitch

Actually, as long as your Kindle books are synced / downloaded with Kindle for PC/Mac app, your Kindle books will come in AZW, which is also how you get your Kindle books decrypted.

If you copy Kindle books from your Kindle device or download from Amazon site, the Kindle books may not be decrypted.

Regards.

Hi, Mitch

Yes.
1. Register the Kindle for PC with your Amazon account, double-click each item to have them downloaded.
2. Get Kindle books from default Kindle content folder ("...\(My) Documents\My Kindle Content\...") and you will be able to decrypt them.

Regards.

I did this today, unsuccessfully at first. On the latest version of Kindle4pc the downloaded books appear in the kindle content as e.g. BOOK59QO74_EBOK.azw - and calibre does not recognise it, even if you change it to the true name.  However, when I downloaded the book directly from the Amazon manage your kindle site and renamed the extension as azw (it had downloaded as azw3) then calibre accepted it and stripped the drm, whereas when I had tried it with the extension azw3 just got the usual drm box not allowing.  Worked beautifully with an azw extension, came into calibre as a mobi.  Thought I would share this as it might help others.

Where do I fined the extension  to change from azw3 to azw on my manage kindle page
reply
06/22/2014 15:54:00
Chris, you won't find the extension on the Amazon manage your kindle page.  From this page first you download the book, i.e. under Actions click on "download & transfer via USB"  This will bring it to the selected file on your pc.  You can then change the extension using rename to delete the 3.  Then bring it into Calibre through "Add Books".  It comes into Calibre as a mobi file with the DRM removed.  Hope this helps.
