Part 1. Convert AZW/KFX to EPUB via Kindle for Windows
Kindle for Windows 11 now supports direct conversion without needing to downgrade to an older Kindle app version. Here's how to convert Kindle to EPUB on Windows with Epubor Ultimate.
Step 1. Download and install Epubor Ultimate.
Step 2. Install the latest version of Kindle for Windows and download Kindle books to your PC.

Newly published books: Kindle books published in 2026 or later require the latest Kindle app to download — older AZW downloads are no longer available for these titles. Make sure both your Kindle app and Epubor Ultimate are updated to the newest version before converting.

Step 3. Remove Kindle DRM.
Launch Epubor Ultimate, all Kindle books downloaded via the Kindle app will show up under the Kindle tab. Select all the Kindle titles and drag and drop them to the right main window to remove DRM.
Step 4. Convert Kindle to EPUB output.
Select EPUB as the output format and hit the convert button. After the conversion, it says Succeeded to the right of the book title. You will find the epub file by clicking Succeeded.
What Does the Converted EPUB Look Like?
A properly converted Kindle-to-EPUB file keeps the reading experience intact — it's not just a plain text dump. With the licensed version of Epubor Ultimate, the output EPUB retains:

Part 2. Convert Kindle to EPUB on Mac (KFX/AZW8)
Kindle for Mac (version 7.20 or above) saves downloaded books as azw8 — a stronger, Mac-specific version of Amazon's KFX DRM. It's not the same as the regular KFX books downloaded via Kindle for Windows in Part 1, and it currently cannot be decrypted directly on Mac with Epubor Ultimate or Calibre.
Here's what you can do instead:
1. Currently, if you don't own a Kindle and your Mac is Apple Silicon, you can DeDRM Kindle Mac via the Kindle for Mac app. You should use the Kindle for Mac app to help download your Kindle kfx books offline in advance.
2. You own a Kindle eInk device such as Kindle Oasis, you can directly download your Kindle books (in KFX format) on your device and then connect the Kindle device to Mac via USB. Epubor Ultimate for Mac helps convert Kindle kfx books from Kindle device to ePub, PDF and AZW3 format.
Part 3. How to Convert Kindle to EPUB with Calibre
If you'd rather use a free tool, you can convert Kindle to EPUB with Calibre. It takes a bit more setup than Epubor Ultimate, but works well for DRM-free books once configured. Here's the overview:
1Install Calibre and the DeDRM + KFX Input plugins. Calibre doesn't remove Kindle DRM natively, so for DRM-protected AZW/KFX books, you'll need the community DeDRM plugin and, for newer KFX-format books, the KFX Input plugin as well.
2Add your Kindle books to Calibre. Download your books via Kindle for PC/Mac first, then locate them in your Kindle content folder and add them to Calibre's library.
3Convert to EPUB. Right-click the book, choose "Convert books," set EPUB as the output format, and click "OK."
Calibre's DeDRM plugin route works on Windows but does not reliably handle the newer KFX-ZIP DRM used by Kindle for Mac — you'll likely hit the same "un-decryptable" issue described in Part 2. Compared to Calibre, Epubor Ultimate removes DRM and converts to EPUB with no plugin installation, and supports both Windows and Mac.

Why does my converted Kindle book have broken layouts, misaligned tables, or missing formulas?
A: This usually happens if your purchased book is an Amazon Print Replica textbook in .AZW4 format. Standard reflowable eBooks (AZW3/KFX) convert to EPUB seamlessly, but fixed-layout AZW4 files require special handling. Sure the process seems easy but where do I find these kindle books?? Where is the folder?
For your information, I downloaded the books via PC from amazon and can view and Download&pin via kindle cloud reader, but I cannot find the ebooks anywhere on my PC.
If I cannot even find it, it completely defeats the 'usefulness' of this application.

If you download your books via Kindle for PC, they are always saved in the default folder: ...Users\Administrator\Documents\My Kindle Content.
If you can not find them, you can try to click Tools-->Options-->Content on your Kindle for PC to find your Kindle current content folder.

When is the convertion App being released for Android users?
This has worked for me for ages... Except today. One of my newer books that I purchased (and those that have issues purchasing a book need to have a talk with themselves about authors deserving payment for their work), seems to need a newer version of the Kindle for PC app. I tried downloading it, but it would not download on the older Kindle app. and Epubor did recognize it, but it could not extract a file I could convert... Any help would be appreciated.

So I downloaded the update (forgetting the specific need for the downgraded app), Downloaded the book. Opened Epubor and it recognized the book. I dragged it over, and it could not decrypt.
I was suggested to downgrade Kindle app, and I did. But could not download the content as it suggested upgrading the app again.

After trying the free version, to make sure it actually works, I did buy the software package.
The user interface is (to me) easy to understand and doesn't need much in ways of learning.
Yes you need to find your input- and output folder, but in general , if you have everything in default mode, it will work from the get-go.
I had to download my Kindle folder fresh, because apparently, I had some conflicting old files that weren't able to be converted. After downloading, they did convert...
Calibre manager window now is able to handle and manage all the files and it is a lot better than the Kindle own file-manager.
In short , well worth the money to convert the files, to be able to use them as i like!

Is this a one time payment, or is a subscription service? I can justify a one time payment. I won't consider a subscription.
If it is a one time payment, is it lifetime even if you move to a subscription service?
How often does amazon mess with their DRM making this kind of software nonfunctional (either temporarily until you find a fix, or permanently if you don't maintain your service)?
I'm so excited that epubor can handle the latest kindle drm now! But I can't tell how well it works; when I used the free trial, the kindle book was converted to txt format before it became epub. So the formatting was a mess. With the paid version, does the kindle book get converted directly to epub? Without becoming a txt file first?
(I doubt I'm the only one who'd appreciate the trial version having the same functionality, if so. I don't mind that the free version only provides a little bit of the book you tried to convert, but I'd like to see what the end version will be quality-wise with the paid version, you know?)
