See How John Helps His Wife Back up Her Books with Epubor Software

My wife has always been an ardent book reader. When eBooks came to fruition, she was not particularly interested, as not turning real pages seemed inappropriate. Nevertheless, I got her a Sony eReader. Over time, she came to really like using an electronic reader, as it remembered where you left off, could magnify the fonts and was easier to lug around rather than a bunch of hardbacks. Yea, she didn’t like soft back books.

This worked great for a while, then the unthinkable occurred. Sony ceased to exist and all of her cloud-based books were no longer available other than what was stored on her eReader. Time passed and Barnes & Noble started promoting their eBooks. So, she got B&N’s NOOK reader which she adapted to and ultimately enjoyed very much. But over time, even B&N’s future started to become questionable. Realizing what happened to her Sony books forced me to find some method to download and convert her eBooks to a universal format, such as EPUB. This is where I found out about Epubor’s Ultimate product. The Ultimate program was unique in that it could both decrypt the book’s file, as well as convert it to the EPUB format. Wonderful, I thought, so I purchase the program.

As with any program, I needed some customer support from Epubor, which was easily obtained and each time most helpful. At some point during this story, I found out that KOBO, another eBook provider, obtained all of Sony’s digital assets. And if you have a KOBO account, you could retrieve those files. So, I did! And as you may have guessed, I converted all of them too.

Then came Amazon, one of the most prominent merchants since Sears & Roebuck, no kidding if you are as old as I am. Of course, they entered into the eBook market and over time, provide many more titles and authors than anyone else, beating their prices as well. So, my wife transitioned over to their Kindle reader and life was good again.

But Amazon is no slouch and probably knows that people would download and freely distribute their ebooks. So, as everyone else, they created their own DRM protocol. Fortunately for me, my Ultimate program had kept up with Amazon’s and other providers DRM protection schemes, therefore I could continue to maintain my own database of my wife’s eBooks in the EPUB format.

Now let me explain my wife’s addiction to reading. With the most recent conversion of her new eBooks, her library now contains 522 eBooks, which will help you understand my recent dilemma. As usual, Amazon revised their DRM and downloading process whereby if using an old version of the Kindle reader, you would no longer be able to download their eBooks, which was essential with the former method of decrypting Kindle eBooks.

This again became an issue with eBooks acquired in 2023. So, now I was stuck and reached out for help. Again, Epubor representatives responded, numerous times, advising that I needed to update my Kindle app and offered several different methods to help me decrypt and convert the new books my wife has acquired.

After several attempts, it worked and I expressed my gratitude to the Epubor helpers. But then I realized, that I had actually converted not the new 2023 books but similar named 2022 eBooks. As I mentioned above, my wife’s 522 eBooks, which mostly relate to the Roman and Viking era, can be quite confusing. I got frustrated, contacted Epubor again, and received advice again, which was pretty much the same. I tried again and oddly enough, I was able to convert a couple of books, but none other. Upon further examination of my process, I realized a couple of 2023 books worked but the others were 2022.

UGH! So, I figured that I had so many eBooks stored in the “My Kindle Content”, the Ultimate folder as well as other directories, that trying to keep things straight was just not working well for me, especially since one directory listed files by their ASIN number, while the other listed the books name. As such, I decided to delete all of the data from all of those directories. Then I downloaded the new files, according to the Epubor representative’s instructions, which I have since put into a very specific list of instructions. Now only seeing the newly added files, I was able to easily download, open in the Ultimate program, decrypt and convert to EPUB all of the new files.

My confusion came about in that the eBook files, labeled in several different connotations, appear in numerous directories, and I was inadvertently selecting the wrong directory to import the new books into the Ultimate program. What a mouthful! Nevertheless, the Epubor representatives stayed with me for over a week of trial and error, whereby their consistent support made all the difference in my finally figuring out what I was doing incorrectly.

I have a decent electronic hobby shop, but since most every electronic product is built with extremely small components, repairs are no longer possible. Such is life. And if you are curious, no, I don’t read eBooks or any books as such. I do read many technical and financial publications, but I leave the Roman and the Viking stuff to my wife.
