Hey everyone! My name is David, and here I write a story on my own experiences with the Epubor software.
I'm a senior citizen living on a fix income. I've got 91 Kindle books. I want to get rid of my Amazon Prime subscription because we just can't afford it any more, but they say they will wipe out my book collection if I do. I've tried Calibre, which worked years ago but doesn't any longer. Then I found the Epubor Ultimate tool. With its help I can de-DRM those 91 books and turn them into ePubs instead so I can actually own them without fear of losing them when I cut off my Amazon subscription.
Download Kindle books to Windows computer via Kindle PC
I used the old version (v2.4.0) of Kindle for PC app to log in, sync, and download my Amazon prime books.
Downloading with the older Kindle program is much slower than the new one for some reason. Maybe that's Amazon's incentive to upgrade.
Convert Amazon Prime to EPUB
Then I converted those important books (such as the ARRL license study guide) in my library.
So I finished converting all 91 Amazon titles, they all came out fine. The epub reader I used on my Windows laptop could open them all, Calibre reader too.
It's a good test and result because some books have lots of photos and graphics inside, full page ads and smaller, etc. to be converted and placed as well.
Open ePub with Sigil, Aquile ePub Reader
I ran the resulting ePub through Sigil first to see where things actually ended up. I think everything ended up in their right places despite the error popup.
I didn't make any changes and simply moved on to the reader.
I ended up using the Aquile ePub Reader since it's the most modern looking and I think treats ePubs the best. The photos with the table of contents overlaid came through just fine.
The only thing I would do, in Sigil, is to improve the look of the text. It's kind of big and chunky and with unusual paragraph spacing. It's not epubor's converter fault, the original is like that too, I'd just condense it down a bit to make it more readable for myself.
Read ePub with Moon Reader Pro on an Android tablet
I copied them to my Android tablet where I normally read books and used Moon Reader Pro. and the font "chunkiness" problem I was seeing on the Windows side was gone. The Android interpretation is much better.
No editing in Sigil needed after all.
So I guess that means you're all doing a great job! ePubs aren't really meant to be read on a laptop anyway, but rather on a tablet or phone.
Wrapping up (editor's notes)
Hi, I'm Angel from Epubor editor's team. Here I share the customer's story with his own experience on backing his books from Amazon Prime to local drive.
To be fair, here I am not advocating piracy, I am teaching you how to back up your purchases for personal use and enjoy reading on your own devices without worring about compatibility. You paid Amazon for those books, already. So Amazon is happy, the publisher is happy. The author is happy and you can download those books. All you are doing is converting a book you own from your reader (such as Kobo) CANNOT read to a format your device CAN read -- de-drm'd epub.
So, if you would like to do a Kindle to Kobo switch but you worry about the formats issues, you can have a good trial of either Calibre plugin(free) or Epubor Ultimate(paid). Both tools won't support all kinds of Amazon prime books because Amazon puts different encryption technologies on these titles, but you can try.
Welcome any suggestions and comments on this series of stories.
