Hey everyone! My name is Barry Robin, and here I write a story of how I used epubor Ultimate to solve the problem of being able to continue to use my old Kindle DX device with the newer Kindle files that it no longer supports.

Starting May 20, 2026, Amazon is discontinuing support for Kindle devices released in 2013 or earlier. It means you can continue to read books already downloaded on these devices, but you will not be able to purchase, borrow, or download additional books on them after that date.
Affected devices include: Kindle 1st and 2nd Generation, Kindle DX and DX Graphite, Kindle Keyboard, Kindle 4, Kindle Touch, Kindle 5, and Kindle Paperwhite 1st Generation.
That's also the reason why I share Barry Robin's story here. I wish it will be helpful for other customers who are in a similar situation (fail to download and access Kindle books on your old Kindle device released before 2013).
Why should I give up my Kindle DX? No, I want to keep my Kindle DX!
I needed a program that would enable me to save my Kindle DX book reader. 
The Kindle DX is an older model that is black and white, but it does things that the newer kindle readers do not do. For one thing, it has built in speakers and a reading app that will read the entire book back to you, through the speakers, and it even automatically turns the pages as it reads!
It is also larger than many of the new Kindles, and it has page buttons; something that the new Kindles got rid of. It even has a keyboard at the bottom for typing in the name of books as you do a search.
So why should I give up my Kindle DX, just because Amazon decided not to create new models with these great features? I did buy a Kindle Colorsoft, which is smaller than the DX, but has color to use as my portable reader, and I decided to keep my Kindle DX for when I am reading at home and want to recreate the feeling of reading books in the larger hard cover book format.
These are the two Kindle book readers I now have and use: Kindle DX and Kindle Colorsoft.
The Kindle DX doesn’t support Amazon’s new AZW files, and they did away with the Kindle DX’s free wireless 3G service, so I used Epubor Ultimate to solve the problem.
Epubor Ultimate to the Rescue!
I used Epubor Ultimate to first take the copy protection off from books that I had already purchased from Amazon, and then I used Epubor Ultimate to convert the newer Kindle file to an older version that I could use with my DX, namely a Mobi file.
First, on the Epubor Ultimate program I looked for and opened, on my computer Kindle for PC, the book Root Magic.
Next, I dragged the Root Magic file into the Drag Drop Books Here area on the right side of the program.
Epubor decrypted the file (meaning took off the DRM) so that it could freely be viewed on any platform.
Next, I selected and pressed the blue Convert to MOBI button on the center bottom of the program.
The file was converted to a MOBI file, a file my old Kindle DX can still use. The program said that the conversion succeeded.
I clicked the blue folder on the bottom right-hand side to find the new MOBI version of the book Root Magic.
The MOBI file was there, and it was labeled: kindle content.
I then used a USB cable to hook up my Kindle DX to the windows computer that I was using the program Epubor Ultimate on.
I opened the Kindle DX file on my minicomputer, and dragged the kindle content (MOBI file) from my computer onto my Kindle DX.
And voila I can now read the book that I purchased, Root Magic on my old, but great Kindle DX reader!!!
Epubor Ultimate saved the day and allowed me to keep using my Kindle DX instead of putting a great device in the trash. Here is the Root Magic book on my Kindle DX:
Epubor Ultimate also does Multiple Books at the same time
Here, I found multiple books that I purchased that had DRM protection on them, preventing me from owning them, and using them on my DX, even though I had paid for them.
I used Epubor Ultimate to make DRM free copies of the last 4 books above. The program decrypted the copies.
Next, I converted the books I purchased to MOBI copies so that I could read them on my Kindle DX. I pressed the button, and the books were successfully converted to MOBI.
Next, I located the files on my computer using the Epubor blue folder to take me there.
I once again used a USB cable to transfer the four book files from my computer to my Kindle DX. And voila, I can now read all 4 previously purchased titles on my old device, the Kindle DX. Here are pictures of one of the titles that are now on my DX for happy reading:
Epubor Ultimate will include pictures & graphics of books
In my using of the program, Epubor Ultimate did include pictures and graphics. I was concerned, because there were people online saying that it only included text after taking off the DRM and converting books, but at least with all of the purchased books that I made DRM free and then turned them into MOBI files, I lost nothing, and all the pictures and/or graphics were still there. (The free test version of the program does text only, but the paid version does everything.) Here is an example of one of my favorite children’s books that I converted: (You will see that the drawings are still there.)
In Conclusion…
The Epubor Ultimate program is a great program in that it enables you to own kindle titles that you have purchased and read these titles on any device. The program also enables you to keep old Amazon Kindle readers that you may have, and get more life out of them.
In my case, the Epubor Ultimate enabled me to take off the DRM and convert books that I purchased to MOBI files that are still compatible with my old Kindle DX; otherwise, I would not be able to read any new kindle books, that I have recently purchased, on my old device, as the new files cannot be used on the DX.
I recommend the Kindle Colorsoft for color content, but unlike my DX, it does not have built in speakers, it does not have page turning buttons, and it does not have a keyboard to type in book titles. For these reasons, I am keeping my Kindle DX for reading at home, and my new smaller Kindle Colorsoft for reading on the go.
Other Ways to Use Epubor Ultimate
If you want page turn buttons, but you want to buy a new device that has page turn buttons then you can use Epubor Ultimate to convert all the Kindle files that you bought to files that the Kobo Libra Colour can read. The Kobo Libra Colour is smaller than my DX, but it does come with page turn buttons and apparently has some features that the present Amazon Kindle readers do not have at the moment, at least not at the price point of the Kobo Libra Colour.
I recommend Epubor Ultimate for getting more out the Kindle books that you have purchased including, but not limited to:
1. Using the program so that you can keep using an older kindle reader to read newer titles on your older device.
2. Using the program so that you can convert your purchased Kindle books and read them on any device, including the Kobo Libra Colour which has page turn buttons and comes with a stylus for writing on the device.
3. Using the program so that if amazon ever goes out of business, you will still be able to read the collection of books that you paid for. (The program enables you to really own your books like in the old days when all books were in the form of soft or hard cover and made from paper.)
While Kindle books will no longer be available for our old Kindle devices (from before 2013), we can convert Kindle books on PC (with a workaround) and to mobi files. Give your old Kindle a new lease on life!
