Epubor Ultimate fully supports the Microsoft Store Kindle app. Please download the latest version of Epubor Ultimate and back up your Kindle books.
Amazon announced that the classic Kindle for PC desktop application will be officially discontinued on June 30, 2026. After this date, the legacy Kindle will stop functioning entirely, meaning users will no longer be able to use it to read or access their Kindle e-books.
To replace it, Amazon launched a new modern Kindle app on the Microsoft Store. It initially rolled out to users in the US on June 2, with a global release scheduled for later this month. Legacy kindle or MS kindle: which one should I installed?.

Part 1: How to Download and Install the New Kindle App
You can easily get the new application directly through Windows.
Step 1 Open the Microsoft Store on your Windows computer.
Step 2 Search for "Kindle" in the top search bar.
Step 3 Click the "Get" or "Install" button to download it to your system.

Alternatively, you can access the app directly via this official marketplace link: Kindle on the Microsoft Store.
Part 2: How to Download Kindle Books for Offline Reading
Once you have installed the app and signed into your Amazon account, downloading your library for offline reading is incredibly simple.
Step 1 Browse your library inside the app. Click on the cover of any book you want to download.

Step 2 Wait a few seconds for the download progress to complete. Once the cloud icon beneath the book cover disappears, the book has successfully downloaded to your computer and is ready to read offline.
Part 3: What’s New in the Updated Kindle App for Windows?
At first glance, the redesigned Kindle app doesn't offer drastically new features—in fact, some advanced settings options have actually been scaled back. However, it still delivers a solid, highly customizable core reading experience.

Key Features of the Kindle Reading Experience:
- 1: Tailor your layout by adjusting font types, text sizes, page colors, margins, text alignment, and line spacing. You can even toggle between single-column and multiple-column layouts. Just tap the Aa menu inside any book to get started.
- 2: Bookmark key pages, highlight important passages, and take notes as you read. Everything is automatically collected in your built-in notebook for easy viewing.
- 3: Look up unfamiliar words instantly. Simply select any word to view its definition without leaving the page.
- 4: Keep tabs on your reading milestones. The app displays your percentage completed and supports real page numbers for most major titles.
- 5: Zoom in on crisp, high-definition color images in books, magazines, comics, and manga. For supported comic titles, enable Guided View to move seamlessly panel by panel.
- 6: Read across multiple devices without losing your place. The app automatically syncs your furthest page read, bookmarks, highlights, and notes.
- 7: Bring your own files into the ecosystem. Easily drag and drop personal documents into the app to read them on your PC or sync them to other Kindle devices.
Where Does the Kindle App Store Books on Windows?
The biggest downside to the new Kindle app is that Amazon has removed the option to change your downloaded file location. Books are now automatically saved to a locked, default directory that is hidden by Windows by default.
To access your downloaded ebook files, you must first reveal hidden files in Windows File Explorer (Win + E):
• On Windows 11: Click View on the top toolbar, hover over Show, and check Hidden items.
• On Windows 10: Click the View tab on the top menu bar and check the box next to Hidden items.
Once hidden files are visible, you can find your downloaded Kindle files by navigating to the following default directory (replace your_username with your actual Windows username):
C:\Users\your_username\AppData\Local\Packages\AMZNKindle.AmazonKindleReadingApp_m1sc522ngdk36\LocalState\Classic\Content

Part 4: Can You Remove DRM from the New Microsoft Kindle App?
Yes. As of June 18, 2026, Epubor Ultimate fully supports the Microsoft Store Kindle app. You can now back up your Kindle books.

Can I remove drm from legacy Kindle( I don't want to Install MS Kindle)
Many users prefer not to install the MS Kindle app, often because they avoid downloading apps from the Microsoft Store, or because they are still on Windows 10 and don't want to upgrade to Windows 11.
Is there a way to use a legacy version of Kindle and remove DRM from it? Absolutely. All you need is a specific version of our software: Epubor Ultimate version 3.0.16.599.
Simply download your Kindle books via Kindle for PC 2.9.1, and then use Epubor Ultimate 3.0.16.599 to convert them all. It's super easy!

Note: Many users have been notified by Amazon that certain Kindle books can no longer be downloaded via Kindle for PC 2.9.1. If you encounter books that cannot be downloaded on the legacy version, you may need to install the MS Kindle app instead and use the latest version of Epubor Ultimate to back up your books.

I don't know for the USA and other countries, here in France it still works, even the downloads. I tested again a few minutes ago just before this present reply.
I cross my fingers...
Anyway, now all my very, very big library is completely converted with Ultimate (I finished a few hours ago, last night in France), and I think I won't buy new Kindle ebooks until the release of a new version of Ultimate working with the new Kindle specifications (probably in several weeks, the time for the team to work quietly). In the meanwhile there are other online bookshops, with Epub format. Ultimate manages them as well for the removal of their DRM. It's a chance... :)
Will you still be able to download files with an old kindle and drag them into epubor to remove the DRM?
That was the workaround the last time Amazon changed the DRM encryption (April/May 2025?)
At the top right of any Amazon page click the black button:
Hello, YourName
Account & Lists
In the appearing menu, click the command:
Content & Devices
Then in the appearing page you can download your books by batches of 25 (each page of the list shows 25 ebooks). You just need to click the button "Select all" at the top of the current page (this button checks all the 25 checkboxes at once) then click "Deliver to device" which is another button very close to this first button. A box asks you to select which device you want as target, you select it and confirm. A few seconds later a small confirmation dialog box appears to tell you that the selected books have been sent to the device.
Once the Kindle app opened (it can be open while doing all that above), check that the filter "Downloaded" is active, and click the button "Sync" at the top of the app. It will begin to rotate.
Be patient, it takes often a quite long time (several minutes when there are many books) to download. Sometimes it's even needed to click several times on "Sync" to be sure that all the 25 books are downloaded.
Then you can open the next page of the list in the Amazon page to do the same for the next 25 books. Etc. But I recommand to process immediately the conversion in Ultimate for the 25 current books (it's easier to manage). Open Ultimate, select "Kindle, and at the top of the leftmost list in Ultimate you can see how many books Ultimate has found in the Kindle folder. If the number is correct, then you can go on for the conversion (right click on any item in the little list, then "All" then "Add", it will convert all the 25 books at once), otherwise if the number is wrong it seems that the downloads in the Kindle app are simply not finished.
That's all.
You do that for each page of the list on the website, 25 by 25 (books).
I recommand to process only with 25 books max at a time. It's easier to manage.
If you want to remove ALL the books currently downloaded in your device after having converted them in Ultimate, there is no need to remove them one by one inside the Kindle app. Just close your Kindle app, then open the Kindle library folder in your Explorer and simply delete all its content (don't delete the folder, only all its content, including the index file "book_asset.db"). Then reopen your Kindle app and check that the filter "Downloaded" is left active. You can see that now the Kindle app tells you that it is empty of downloaded files and it invites you to clear the filter. Don't clear the filter, it remains useful all along your work on all the pages of your Kindle library. Simply process now with the next page on the Amazon web site as above. This procedure works perfect, even if you need several days to finish your work. I recently did that way to proceed 25 by 25 for all my very, very big library of Kindle books.
We only could wait.
Does the new version of the Kindle Windows client only support Windows 11?
Right now, I can only find it in the Microsoft Store, and after downloading it on my Windows 10, it says the system is not supported.
Is there any way to fix this?
De-DRMing them, when it will work, will produce high-res comics?
Because i've been told that Amazon send HD comics only to phones, not PC
hopefully Iris will get this fixed soon. Until then I'll use the older kindle app until that no longer is an option
C:\Users\your_username\AppData\Local\ ...
and giving the instruction to replace "your_username" with your account name, you can use an environment variable so that the entire path can be copy/pasted into Explorer's address bar:
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\ ...
Genial!
I was able to download the updated epubor version which fixed the kfx issue I was having with the kindle books but I'm still having an issue with de-encrypting some of the kobo books even after closing out of both the kobo reader and the latest epubor and reloading the books and downloading them on the kobo reader.

Used Kindle 1.0.16118
Epubor Utlimate v3.0.16.483
Did as per last two comments, not work
You are still using the very old version of Epubor Ultimate.
Well, this is interesting.
I got two books at Amazon today that Bookspry after dark listed as free.
The PC Kindle app I have, Legacy kindle version 2.9.1 (71006), still was able to download the books and Epubor v 3.0.16.599 was able to find the books and remove the DRM.
Bonjour,
Cordialement,
Please be aware that the Kindle for Windows app received an update yesterday. If you are able to block automatic updates on your end, our software will continue to work.
Our technical team is already working on an update to ensure compatibility with the latest Kindle version, and we expect to release a fix soon. We truly appreciate your patience and understanding.
Usability feedback: I highlight a lot when I read books and write notes.
In the new Epubor app, you always have to (1) select the text, (2) (in popup) click on highlight, 3) then select my default highlight color yellow which happens to be at the end of the next popup. 3 clicks!
In the old app, you could do this with 2 clicks and this makes a difference.
Can you please: (a) Either allow to configure a default highlight color that can be selected with one click (after text selection), or (b) allow to reorder the highlight colors in the second popup so I could define my favorite order and basically get my highlight with two clicks on the same spot?
Thanks
